Hi, my name’s Mike Jackson and I live in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Among my interests are monitoring aircraft on HF radio and dabbling in VHF reception, ACARS and ADS-B, essentially any aircraft communications.
This has been a hobby for me since I was about 14 years old when my cousins who lived near Manchester’s Ringway airport showed me a radio that could listen into what the pilots were saying to ATC and vice versa.
Since then I’ve had a myriad of receivers both HF and VHF/UHF. My current receiver is an AOR AR3000, an SDR kit made from an R820T dongle and Nooelec UpConverter. I have a second R820T dongle for VHF reception.
My HF antenna is a Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop and VHF is a homebrew dipole cut for 123.7MHz and fashioned from some aluminum rod and plumbing tubes!
I also have a Beast ADS-B receiver coupled to a DPD Productions 1090MHz antenna running a decoder on a Linux Raspberry Pi.
